Follicular Monitoring
Follicular Monitoring is a key diagnostic and tracking tool in fertility care. At Jeevan Mithra Fertility & Women Care Centre, we provide this detailed ultrasound-based service to help patients optimize their chances of conception, whether naturally or through assisted reproductive techniques like IUI or IVF.
What is Follicular Monitoring?
Follicular Monitoring involves a series of transvaginal ultrasound scans performed during a woman’s menstrual cycle. The scans are used to observe the growth and development of ovarian follicles—fluid-filled sacs where eggs mature. By tracking follicle size and number, doctors can accurately predict the timing of ovulation.
Purpose of Follicular Monitoring
The primary aim of this process is to identify the most fertile window and support timely interventions like ovulation induction, IUI, or IVF. It allows our fertility specialists to assess how well the ovaries are responding to treatment and adjust medications or procedures accordingly for better outcomes.
Step-by-Step Process
- Initial Consultation & Cycle Planning: A fertility specialist will first evaluate your menstrual history and any previous treatment records to plan the scan schedule tailored to your cycle.
- Baseline Ultrasound: The first scan is typically done on day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle to assess the ovaries and endometrial lining before follicle growth begins.
- Sequential Monitoring: Subsequent scans are performed from day 9 onwards, every 1–2 days, to track the growth of follicles. Hormonal blood tests may also be recommended in some cases.
- Ovulation Trigger: When a dominant follicle reaches the optimal size (typically 18–22 mm), an ovulation trigger shot (like hCG) may be administered to release the egg at the right time.
- Timed Procedure or Natural Intercourse: Once ovulation is predicted, the couple may be advised to try timed intercourse or proceed with an assisted procedure such as IUI.
